On my way to Penang last month, I received a call by SME magazine to be interviewed and featured in May’s issue. This morning while I am in the bookstore, I realised that the interview is released. The topic of the month is “The Young & The Restless” – featuring 14 youth entrepreneurs on what it’s like to be young and successful. I am blessed to be featured together with all of them, together with a good friend of mine Harish!
You may not be able to read the interview from the above screen shot. Here you go…sharing with you the content of my interview.
1. Tell us a little about the nature of your business/company.
Together with my business partner, we run True North Asia Sdn Bhd which specialise on Alternative Investment, namely real estate participation investment, Gold&Silver investment, fine wine investment and arts & antiques. We hold education seminars, labs and workshop for corporate companies, universities and the public.
2. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I always expose myself to learn from successful investors and entrepreneurs. I wonder why the rich keep on getting richer and the poor keep on getting poorer. The investment portfolio that private banker clients are exposed to are always out of reach to layman on the street. Hence My partner and myself started to wonder how can we let all layman on the street be part of the giant’s man game. One of the research we found in Merill lynch world wealth report is the high networth investors do keep 7-10% of their portfolio into alternative investment and we realize, holding physical assets is the way to go other than our business being the biggest asset.
3. Do you think Gen Y entrepreneurs differ from entrepreneurs from previous generations? What makes young entrepreneurs “special”?
Everyone of us come to the world naked. We are all the same species. Deng Xiao Ping once said,’whether u are a black cat or white cat, as long as u can catch mice, u are a good cat!’
One of the advantage the GenY entrepreneurs have is the time and ability to learn from the experience of successful entrepreneurs and allow us to be wary of the pitfalls and challenges ahead of us. Leaving an impression be it good or bad is better than leaving no impression at all. We did two weeks ago on a group of GenY entrepreneurs recently and found that they have many things in common!
a. They may not know how to start being an entrepreneur but they are real hungry enough to seek and ask. The moment u know how to let ur E-GO, u will humble down to learn from people who are better than us.
b. They know where they wanted to be and no matter how badly their parents object, they will still bite on and dash through the challenges. 90% of the youth we talked to are facing this as the main challenge but it still doesn’t daunt them from moving forward! I applaud to that!
c. They may or may not have a degree or master, but they have PHD! They have the pain, hunger and desire to be successful! This is something that a young entrepreneur must always have in them.
4. Any advice or thoughts to share with our young entrepreneur readers out there?
The roots of a green plant grown in a greenhouse is never as strong as the plant grown in the wild! If u dream to be a successful entrepreneur, put yourself in the wild and never give up no matter how tough or lonely the journey is going to be.
